The Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) is set to take control of the newly renovated stadiums in Karachi and Lahore on February 5, just two weeks before the much-anticipated Champions Trophy begins on February 19.
These upgraded venues will first be tested during matches of a tri-series featuring Pakistan, South Africa, and New Zealand, allowing time to assess the improvements before the big event. However, there have been concerns about whether the stadiums will be fully ready in time and if the PCB will have enough opportunity to evaluate the new features and constructions.
Arshad Khan, the General Manager of the National Stadium in Karachi, assured that the renovation work, including a brand-new building, will be completed by the end of January. Similarly, the upgrades at the Gaddafi Stadium in Lahore are on track, with both venues expected to be handed over to the PCB on the same date.
The PCB has invested around 12 billion Pakistani rupees on these enhancements, which also include the Rawalpindi stadium. The National Stadium has seen significant changes, including a redesigned five-story building that houses essential facilities like the ICC’s Anti-Corruption and Anti-Doping units, physiotherapy rooms, and areas for match officials. The modern dressing rooms are located on the second floor.
In addition to these upgrades, the corporate and hospitality areas have been improved, with 24 new boxes that can accommodate around 1,000 guests. The main building will also feature a Chairman’s Box and administrative offices on the top floor.
For fans attending events, there are new comfortable folding chairs, increased seating capacity, and additional washrooms. A pedestrian bridge is being constructed to facilitate easier access for spectators. They will also benefit from two new digital scoreboards and modern LED floodlights situated on six poles, ensuring better visibility for both day and night games. The outdoor practice nets have also been equipped with floodlights.
Similarly, improvements have been made at the Gaddafi Stadium to enhance the overall experience for fans and players alike.
