Karun Nair Shines in Vijay Hazare Trophy, Aiming for Indian Team Return
Karun Nair, the captain of the Vidarbha cricket team, is excelling in the current Vijay Hazare Trophy. After being overlooked for the Indian Test team despite a stunning triple century on his debut in 2016, Nair has made it his goal to make a strong comeback to the national setup.
In the ongoing tournament, Nair has been in phenomenal form, scoring five centuries so far, tying with Narayan Jagadeesan for the tournament record. The 33-year-old’s scores include impressive innings of 112, 44, 163, 111, 112, and 122 not out. Thanks to his outstanding performances, Vidarbha has won all their matches and secured a spot in the semi-finals.
In a recent interview, Nair reflected on a challenging period in his career when he was dropped from the Karnataka team. He expressed gratitude for the chance he received with Vidarbha and recognized the importance of scoring heavily to secure his place.
"During the six or seven months I didn’t play, I spent three hours each day just to attend net sessions. I had no other choice. I felt emotional about not being selected, but I knew I had to move forward and improve myself. It wasn’t easy, and it took a couple of months for me to fully recover and get back to practice. I focused on preparing so that when I got another chance, I could prove myself and avoid being dropped again. The only way to do that was to score runs consistently," Nair shared during the Vijay Hazare Trophy.
He also expressed his desire to return to the Indian Test team in 2024. "Every cricketer aspires to play for their country, and that’s my goal now — to play Test cricket again. I believe in my abilities and am confident that I can achieve this," he stated.
The Ups and Downs of Karun Nair’s International Career
Karun Nair’s journey with the Indian national cricket team is a mix of impressive milestones and surprising setbacks, particularly highlighted by his notable rise to fame following a remarkable triple century.
Nair made his mark on the international stage in 2016, debuting in ODIs against Zimbabwe. However, his ODI career was short-lived, scoring only 7 and 39 runs in his first two matches, which prevented him from securing a regular position in the squad.
His Test debut came later in the year against England, and it was in his third Test match that Nair achieved a remarkable feat. On December 19, 2016, he scored 303 not out in Chennai, becoming just the second Indian batsman after Virender Sehwag to hit a triple century in Test cricket. This incredible achievement was also notable as he was only the third player ever to convert his first Test century into a triple.
Despite this incredible performance, Nair’s time with the national team was fleeting. He was surprisingly dropped for the next Test against Bangladesh in February 2017, with Ajinkya Rahane taking his spot. This marked the start of a tough journey for Nair as he struggled to reclaim his place. During subsequent series, including one against Australia, he spent much of his time on the sidelines and scored only 53 runs when given opportunities.
Nair’s last Test match was in March 2017 against Australia in Dharamshala. Unfortunately, he couldn’t convert good starts into bigger scores, and with other talented players like Hanuma Vihari in the picture, he fell further out of favor. The selection committee preferred players who offered versatility, contributing beyond just batting.
MSK Prasad, the chairman of selectors, later explained the reasoning behind Nair’s exclusion, emphasizing the need for a balanced team. However, Nair has voiced concerns about the lack of clear communication from the management regarding his role and future within the team.
As Nair continues to impress in the Vijay Hazare Trophy, many cricket fans hope to see him don the Indian jersey once again in the near future.
