Djokovic and Alcaraz Set for Early Showdown at Australian Open
The excitement is building as the Australian Open, the first Grand Slam of the year, kicks off on January 14. The men’s singles draw has fascinating matchups, with superstar players Novak Djokovic and Carlos Alcaraz placed in the same quarter.
Alcaraz, still chasing his first Australian Open title, will kick off his tournament against Alexander Shevchenko. On the other hand, Djokovic, who is looking to reclaim his title in Melbourne, faces off against 19-year-old American wildcard Nishesh Basavareddy.
Defending champion Jannik Sinner is the top seed and finds himself in the opposite half of the draw, where he could potentially meet No. 2 seed Alexander Zverev in the semifinals. Sinner’s journey includes a tough quarterfinal against eighth-seeded Alex de Minaur, who has yet to defeat Sinner in their nine past encounters. De Minaur will start his campaign against Botic van de Zandschulp.
Other first-round matches to watch include Nick Kyrgios, who might face Zverev in the third round, and 15th seed Jack Draper, who is entering the tournament with concerns about a hip injury.
All eyes will be on Djokovic as he aims for his record 11th title at the Australian Open and a chance to secure his 25th Grand Slam victory. Djokovic had a challenging end to 2024, missing out on winning any Grand Slam titles while Sinner and Alcaraz shared the honors.
With Andy Murray joining his coaching team, Djokovic hopes to turn his luck around in Melbourne, especially after exiting the Brisbane International in the quarter-finals, a warm-up event for the Australian Open.
In a noteworthy note for Indian tennis, Sumit Nagal has made it directly into the main draw and will begin his campaign against 26th seed Tomas Machac in the opening round.
