MOSCOW: On Saturday, Russia announced that it had intercepted and shot down eight ATACMS missiles supplied by the United States. Moscow has previously warned that the use of these missiles could lead to a hypersonic missile strike on central Kyiv.

According to publicly available information, ATACMS missiles have a maximum range of 190 miles (300 kilometers). The Russian defense forces reported that their air defense systems successfully took down eight of these US-made missiles along with 72 drones. However, they did not provide details on any potential casualties or damage caused by the attacks.

In related news, at least five people have lost their lives in the latest round of attacks between Russian and Ukrainian forces. The outgoing administration of US President Joe Biden has delivered long-range ATACMS missiles to Ukraine, which have the capability to reach into Russian territory. This move has raised tensions, prompting Moscow to retaliate with its new hypersonic missiles.
