Hamas Urges Gaza Factions to Clarify Hostage Details

Hamas Engages in Hostage Accounting Ahead of Possible Ceasefire

GAZA STRIP, Palestinian Territories: On Sunday, sources from various Palestinian groups in Gaza reported that Hamas has requested details on the hostages they are holding. This move is seen as a preparation for a potential ceasefire and hostages’ release agreement with Israel.

Hamas has instructed groups including the Popular Front and the Popular Resistance Committees to gather information about the captives, specifically their current status—whether they are alive or deceased.

The situation escalated after Hamas launched a surprise attack on Israel on October 7, 2023, taking a total of 251 individuals hostage. As of now, 96 of these hostages remain in Gaza, with 34 confirmed dead by the Israeli military.

In November 2023, a temporary truce allowed for the exchange of numerous hostages for Palestinian prisoners held by Israel. However, since then, efforts to restart negotiations have largely been unsuccessful.

Recently, the Prime Minister of Qatar indicated that there is renewed hope for a ceasefire and hostage release, particularly following the election of Donald Trump in the United States.

A Hamas source mentioned that there have been increased discussions involving mediators from Qatar, Egypt, and Turkey, adding that new talks in Cairo are expected to begin soon. This source also urged Israel to stop its military operations, emphasizing that the presence of Israeli forces complicates efforts to gather information about all hostages.

The initial attack on October 7 resulted in the tragic loss of 1,208 lives, as reported by AFP using official Israeli figures. In response, Israel’s military campaign has led to the deaths of 44,708 individuals in Gaza, most of whom are civilians, according to the Hamas-run health ministry—data that the United Nations deems credible.
