Concerns Arise in India Over Turkey’s New Drone Capabilities
In a significant development in military technology, Turkey has unveiled its advanced Bayraktar Akinci drone, which is capable of launching ballistic missiles from the air. This achievement has raised alarms in India, especially as Turkey has previously supplied drones to Pakistan, India’s long-standing rival.
The Bayraktar Akinci drone has drawn international attention following its effective performance in the ongoing conflict between Russia and Ukraine. Recently, Turkey showcased its capabilities by successfully test-firing a UAV-230 supersonic missile from the drone, hitting a target from a striking distance of 155 kilometers. This places Turkey as the second nation, after Israel, to demonstrate such a capability.
According to the manufacturer’s website, the Akinci drone is equipped with advanced technology, including dual artificial intelligence systems for real-time sensor processing and situational awareness. It has the ability to conduct operations similar to those of fighter jets and is equipped with various radar systems and communication tools.
This advancement in drone technology has caused concern within India, particularly as it has the potential to shift the balance of power in the region. Analysts note that the effectiveness of such drones in combat situations could enhance Pakistan’s military capabilities.
In another related development, the Turkish defense ministry released footage showing the Bayraktar TB3 drone successfully taking off and landing on Turkey’s first amphibious assault ship, the TCG Anadolu. Initially, the ship was designed to operate F-35 fighter jets, but following Turkey’s exclusion from the F-35 program due to its acquisition of Russian defense technology, the focus has shifted to deploying drones.
Baykar, the company behind the Bayraktar drones, has reported successful testing of their drones on the Anadolu. Their earlier model, the Bayraktar TB2, gained notoriety for its use in conflicts in Ukraine and between Azerbaijan and Armenia.
These advancements in drone technology not only highlight Turkey’s increasing capabilities but also present challenges for neighboring countries, particularly India.
