Former Indian cricket sensation Robin Uthappa has expressed his discontent regarding the Chennai Super Kings (CSK) franchise for allowing the young New Zealand cricketer Rachin Ravindra to utilize their training facilities in Chennai, just before an impending Test series against India. This practice session came before Ravindra’s one-off Test against Afghanistan, where he sought to acclimatize himself to Indian playing conditions.
The decision proved pivotal for the 24-year-old talent, who delivered a breathtaking performance, scoring 134 runs off just 157 balls during the first Test in Bengaluru. He followed up this stellar display with a composed, unbeaten 39 in the second innings, significantly contributing to New Zealand’s successful chase of 107 runs, thereby securing a historic Test victory—their first in India in a staggering 36 years.
Upon receiving the Player of the Match accolade, Ravindra credited his training at the CSK academy as a significant factor in his stellar batting display. However, Uthappa’s thoughts diverged sharply as he criticized CSK’s decision to facilitate Ravindra’s training, asserting that national interests should take precedence over those of franchises.
“Rachin Ravindra came here and practiced at the CSK Academy, which is undoubtedly a well-regarded franchise that supports its players. However, there must be a clear boundary where national interests prevail over franchise loyalties, especially when a foreign player is poised to compete against our nation,” Uthappa articulated candidly on his YouTube channel.
Delving deeper, Uthappa, who himself wore the CSK colors during the 2021 and 2022 seasons, acknowledged the franchise’s reputation for going above and beyond for its players. Yet he emphasized that kindness has its limits, especially when collective national pride is at stake. “While I admire CSK’s commitment to their players, I firmly believe that we must draw a line to protect our national integrity,” he emphasized.
The 2007 T20 World Cup champion further lauded Ravindra for his magnificent century in Bengaluru, labeling it as one of the finest innings ever played by an overseas cricketer in India. “Ravindra’s innings was a marvel, worthy of commendation. Scoring 134 runs on that challenging wicket is commendable; it signaled his prowess and hinted at a promising future for New Zealand cricket,” he stated with conviction.
Ravindra continued to impress, scoring an impressive 65 in the first innings of the subsequent Test in Pune. Ultimately, he emerged as the second-highest run-scorer of the series, amassing 256 runs across six innings at an average of 51.20, playing an instrumental role in New Zealand’s historic 3-0 series sweep over India.
