NATO Chief Reveals North Korea Sends Forces to Support Russia

NATO Secretary General Mark Rutte delivered a striking revelation on Monday: North Korean troops have been dispatched to bolster Russia’s efforts amid its ongoing conflict in Ukraine, underscoring what he termed the “growing desperation” of President Vladimir Putin.

At a press conference, Rutte voiced grave concerns about the expanding military collaboration between Russia and North Korea, labeling it a significant threat to both Indo-Pacific and Euro-Atlantic security. “Today, I can confirm that North Korean military units are now present in Russia, with deployments specifically noted in the Kursk region,” Rutte stated to the assembled media.

As the situation unfolds, Russian forces are engaged in fierce combat against a Ukrainian incursion in the same Kursk area.

In related commentary, U.S. House Intelligence Chair Mike Turner emphasized the necessity for the United States to consider military action against North Korean forces if they attempt to infiltrate Ukraine.

Rutte cited alarming statistics: “Putin’s war has resulted in over 600,000 Russian soldiers either killed or injured, and he is now reliant on foreign support to persist in his aggressive campaign against Ukraine.” This stark context amplifies the implications of North Korean involvement, which Rutte described as “a significant escalation” and a “dangerous expansion” of what he termed Russia’s unlawful offensive.

U.S. Defense Secretary Lloyd Austin corroborated the reports about North Korean troop movements, describing the deployment as “a very, very serious issue” should these forces reach Ukrainian soil.

However, the Kremlin has been quick to dismiss these claims, labeling them as “fake news,” while a representative from North Korea at the United Nations derided the reports as “groundless rumors,” according to Reuters.

In a striking diplomatic response, South Korea has demanded the retraction of North Korean troops allegedly aiding Russia.

Rutte made these statements in Brussels, following a high-level briefing at NATO headquarters from a South Korean delegation that included prominent intelligence and military officials alongside senior diplomats.

He noted that NATO is “actively consulting within the alliance, with Ukraine, and with our Indo-Pacific partners” regarding the evolving situation. “We continue to monitor the situation closely,” he added, opting not to entertain questions from the press following his statement.
